NEW CHAIRMEN SELECTED BY MERCED COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
MERCED – During its Board meeting Tuesday, the Merced County Board of Supervisors selected a new chairman and vice chairman for the upcoming year.

District 2 Supervisor Hub Walsh was unanimously selected as the Board’s 2016 chairman, while District 3 Supervisor Daron McDaniel was unanimously selected to serve as the Board’s 2016 vice chairman. Walsh will succeed District 1 Supervisor John Pedrozo, who served as the 2015 chairman.

The selection of a new chairman and vice chairman is an annual process that takes place during the first Board meeting of the year. During his closing statement as chairman, Pedrozo highlighted many of the Board’s accomplishments over the past year, including the County’s drought response, Groundwater Ordinance, economic development, public safety improvements and an unemployment rate that dipped to an eight-year low of 8.1 percent in September.

He also shared that the County is taking steps to further address employee safety in the wake of recent tragedies in the state, across the nation and abroad.

“I believe we had a very successful year that resulted in several goals being accomplished,” Pedrozo said during Tuesday’s meeting. “There are so many little efforts behind the scenes that go unnoticed that make organizations like ours go.”

Walsh, the incoming chairman, highlighted many of the same topics as matters that will be further considered throughout the next year. Issues such as drought, groundwater, medical marijuana cultivation and sales, economic development efforts between the County and cities, jail reconstruction, engaging with UC Merced on its 2020 Plan, public safety and homelessness issues are all on the table, he said.

“I want to thank all of you on the dais for your support as chair this year, both in terms of your vote, but also in
terms of your support in the coming year,” Walsh said during Tuesday’s meeting.

This is Walsh’s second time serving as Board chairman, while 2015 was Pedrozo’s third time serving in the chairmanship role.
